UNESCO is working with the national agencies to reposition the STI system to support national development, strengthening national capacities and regional and international networks for innovation.

UNESCO supports national stakeholders to achieve these objectives through targeted activities, aimed at developing capacities for innovation systems management, strengthening research and development, harnessing the potential of STI for improving development outcomes, and promoting the opportunities and contributions of women and young people in the sciences.

women in public research and development institutionsUNESCO prepared a report on the status of women in public research and development (R&D) institutions. The Report was part of the ongoing work to support and strengthen the plans of the Women in Science Association in Tanzania, and to strengthen their platform for evidence based advocacy campaigns.



13 – 17 August 2012

NMAISTUNESCO and the Nelson Mandela African Institute of Science & Technology (NMAIST) in Arusha developed a program to build capacities on innovation systems management. A train the trainers workshop on Innovation Systems Leadership was conducted with selected staff of NMAIST and the College of Engineering and Technology of the University of Dar es Salaam who shall cascade the training to other stakeholders in the country.

What are the necessary skill sets and mind sets senior members of public and private institutions should have in order to manage innovation effectively in their organizations? What are the important capabilities that most innovative organizations share? These were the subjects of a training workshop organized for senior officials of selected public and private sector institutions in Tanzania.

The Book launchPrime Minister of the United Republic of Tanzania, Mr. Mizengo Pinda, officially launched the Book “Lighting A Fire” written by the Tanzania Academy of Sciences (TAAS). The book was written with the support of UNESCO and the Network of African Science Academies (NASAC) based in Nairobi. It aims to encourage aspiring young men and women in Tanzania to become scientists.

TAwardhe Tanzanian women in science association, known as the Science, Technology and Innovation for Women in Tanzania (STI4WT) formally starts business with the election of interim leaders and the call for membership. Prizes were also awarded to young graphic artists who designed the Logo and proposed Mottos for the Association.

STIInnovation, creativity, new products development, and strategic marketing of R&D products: these were the themes of a workshop dedicated to linking R&D Institutions with the private sector in a university-science partnership (UNISPAR)-like activity. The aim was to build enough support to enable both the private sector and R&D institutions to understand the complex dynamics involved in new products development and strategic marketing, essential for successful innovation.

Maasai womenMasai women can now breathe a sigh of relief (literally), as they build a newly redesigned hut with better control of indoor air pollution and improved lighting. The concept for the new huts was jointly designed by the Ololoskwan women community, UNESCO and the Tanzania Association of Women Architects for Humanity as part of a set of activities for enhancing women’s socio-economic development through science, technology and innovation in the Masai community.

certificateA training workshop organised by UNESCO’s Tanzania National Commission (NATCOM) and the UNESCO Office in Dar es Salaam has helped Masai women of Ololoskwan to improve their understanding of how to scientifically guarantee the standard and quality of their milk products. The training has also led to a new desire by the women and the community to start a milk-based enterprise. The community has mobilized to set up a team, and are contributing funds for the start up.
