Informed decision-making is dependent on accurate and timely collection, analysis, and use of quality and relevant data. Having a robust sector-wide monitoring and evaluation system provides policy makers and the public with information to develop and advocate for improvements in the education system.

In Tanzania, UNESCO is working closely with education Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) specialists to enhance capacities of the governments of Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar to carry out sector-wide monitoring and evaluation of their education policies and plans. With technical support provided by the UNESCO International Institute for Educational Planning (IIEP), UNESCO is also assisting the governments of Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar to develop and implement a Capacity Development, Plan to strengthen the systems and structures that guide M&E to foster long-term improvements.
