Freedom of Expression is one of the basic human rights that are enshrined in Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights [link to UDHR]. Promoting freedom of expression is one of the UNESCO’s mandates. We promote freedom of expression by supporting press freedom. Every year, we collaborate with Media Professionals to celebrate World Press Freedom day.
We develop the capacity of media professionals in investigative journalism, and promote media professionalism by delivering programmes that strengthen gender responsiveness and ethical conduct.
UNESCO is also involved in the strengthening laws to promote and protect the Freedom of Information, the Right to Information, and the involvement of the media in promoting dialogue for peace and reconciliation.
