Global Learning XPRIZE Project for the Promotion of Early Learning through Innovative Technologies in Tanzania

Training of Village Tablet Supervisor in KorogweThe UNESCO - XPRIZE project for promotion of early learning through innovative technology in Tanzania, envisages to foster the learning outcomes of out of school children, in terms of literacy and numeracy skills.

The project consists of a worldwide competition to develop low cost and scalable software that can be used for self-learning in a household context. It provides a second chance to those who were left behind and were not able to enrol in the formal school system.

The project is being implemented in 167 remote and underprivileged hamlets in Tanga region, targeting around 2,400 children and their respective families.

During the 15 months of the field test, children will be able to interact with a software, which will harness the learning in terms of 3R’s (reading, writing and arithmetic). The application will remain as an open source solution, to be used in any context and in any country.

141 village tablets supervisors (vitongoji mama/baba) from the participating villages have been identified and trained to actively monitor the project implementation at the sub-village level. Simultaneously, 141 members of the project’s village committee have been identified and trained at the same extent as the vitongoji mama/baba during 3 days of training implemented in different wards in the region.

XPRIZE team worked with 18 District and 80 Ward Officials to build the capacity to monitor the project and insure a sound implementation of the project, at all levels. The trainings were focused on project implementation and roles and responsibilities of all parties.

Enhancing adolescent girls’ performance and retention at ordinary secondary school level in Tanzania

Female students from of the secondary schools in Micheweni, PembaAdolescents (10-19 years of age) constitute more than one fifth of Tanzania’s population, with more than half being girls. About 62% of adolescent girls in Tanzania marry before the age of 20 and 16% are already mothers or have begun childbearing. The problem of adolescent pregnancy not only affects the girls’ health but also forces them to drop out of school, thus hindering them from reaching their full potential and limiting their ability to secure employment opportunities in the future.  Girls who are particularly at risk of dropping out due to pregnancy or early marriage are those living in remote or rural areas where gender discriminatory practices are still rampant and girls have scarce access to information on their rights and how to claim them.

UNESCO will strengthen its ongoing intervention on supporting retention and performance of adolescent girls at ordinary secondary school level in 3 districts, 2 in Shinyanga Rural and Kahama in Shinyanga region and Micheweni district in Pemba and expand the intervention to Tanga and Loliondo, two other locations where UNESCO Science, Culture and CI sectors intervention are taking place and where indicators for girls exclusion at secondary school level are high. UNESCO-China Funds-in-Trust Project on Enhancing Teacher Education for Bridging the Education Quality Gap in Africa

Teachers in a training sessionThe overall objective of the project is to support the government’s efforts to accelerate progress towards achievement of Education for All (EFA) and education-related Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by strengthening the capacity of two key Teachers Colleges to bridge the teacher and education quality gap through innovative, ICT-enhanced teaching and learning methods.

Specifically, the project intends to:

  1. To improve the capacity of two key Teachers Colleges to develop and provide quality pre-service programmes for Science and Mathematics teachers and tutors through ICT-supported innovations;
  2. To strengthen the capacity of two key Teachers Colleges to provide in-service programmes for Science and Mathematics teachers through blended learning modalities and ICT-supported innovations;
  3. To strengthen the support and networking mechanism that link two key Teachers Colleges and eight other Teachers Colleges offering diploma in Science and Mathematics education, and facilitate knowledge sharing;
  4. To develop effective M&E mechanisms.
