Steering the debate on girls’ education in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM)

UNESCO International Symposium and Policy Forum on Girls’ Education in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) (c) World Bank-Charlotte Kesl (4)Despite unprecedented progress in expanding access to education, gender equality in education remains out of reach. More girls are in school today than ever before but socio-economic factors and gender-based discrimination prevent them from equal opportunities to complete and benefit from an education of their choice.

A major concern is the low female participation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) studies and consequently STEM careers. STEM prevails every aspect of our lives and are catalytic for the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, underpinning solutions to existing and emerging challenges. It is crucial for women and girls to have equal opportunities to contribute to, and benefit from, STEM.

UNESCO seeks to expand understanding of gender gaps in STEM education, and the factors that promote girls’ and women’s participation, achievement and continuation in STEM studies and careers.

The first UNESCO International Symposium and Policy Forum ‘Cracking the Code: Girls’ Education in STEM’ will take place in Bangkok, Thailand, on 28-30 August 2017. The event will serve as a platform to share the latest research and practice, facilitate policy dialogue and promote collaboration and experience sharing from around the globe.

UNESCO will also launch a global report at the event which explores the root causes that disadvantage girls in STEM and presents examples of promising programmes, in the presence of UNESCO’s Director-General, the Minister of Education of Thailand and other high-level representatives.
